At Sciennes, we recognise that we are incredibly fortunate to enjoy such strong partnerships with families and to have such ongoing marvellous parental support and engagement. Jay Santhanham, Convener of Parent Council Events and Fundraising subgroup has worked tirelessly with a team of Parent Council members, including Chair of the Parent Council Phoebe Cochrane, and an army of parent volunteers – including Jay’s husband – to pull together another wonderful family event on Saturday 26th May 2018 which has raised an astonishing £3000! Many thanks to all who contributed, before, during and afterwards.

Dr Jay Santhanham, Parent Council Events and Fundraising Convener
This year, the focus was on the children leading activities in celebration of the Year of Young People. Principal Teacher Shona Pearmain, Alison Mackintosh, Wendy French and Jennifer Ferguson in P5 and Jane Maguire, Catherine Gibb, Zoe Lillitos, Katherine Clark and Gillian Clarkson in P4 supported all their pupils to design and make exciting, engaging, enterprising activities at the Summer Fair. Fiona Barker led Scratch coding sessions, supported by P5-P7 coders and one P3 coder in the ICT Suite and on iPads. Many thanks to Finlay from Robotical for providing hands-on demonstrations with Marty the Robot. Our P6/7 Equalities group raised awareness and undertook surveys on their stall, demonstrating all the initiative and leadership they have shown this year. P6 and P7 pupils volunteered as Fair Makers throughout the day.
Jay arranged for many STEM Ambassadors to contribute to the day by providing free STEM activities for the children and we were treated to music and dance from The Friendship Band, Glee Club and Ihayami Dance as well as Henna tattoos. Lovely to meet Bruce Adamson, Children and Young People’s Commissioner of Scotland, dropping by with his family. Thank you to all our many contributors and these photographs are an attempt to capture just a glimpse of a wonderful, sunny, family day:

This guy has strong views on what his city should be like. Today he persuaded Edinburgh Council to adopt play streets, thereby making it a place where communities can come together, get to know each other & all ages play safely on their own street. He is 7. @SciennesPS pic.twitter.com/pRHdXLwjcL
